EHDR-UK
sends letter to Foreign Office, UK
London, 2 December 2003
EHDR-UK
sent a letter to the British Foreign Office urging the British government
to do what it can in order to put pressure and persuade the Ethiopian
government to accept EEBC's ruling on the border issue. The letter
stated "We would like to urge you to put all available pressure on
Ethiopia to abide by the international body's ruling which both parties
agreed to be final and binding".
The letter went on
to say that although the enactment of EEBC’s ruling is very important,
the letter stated that the political, economic and social developments of
Eritrea cannot be brought to a standstill until the border issue is
resolved. The letter reaffirmed EHDR-UK's belief that the move towards
democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights should not be held
hostage by the government until the current exigency is fulfilled.
The
letter concluded by asking her Majesty's government to also put pressure
on Eritrean government to:
-
release all
political prisoners, journalists and those imprisoned illegally;
-
implement the
ratified Eritrean Constitution;
-
introduce an
independent and proficient judiciary;
-
reinstate free
press;
-
stop the
persecution of dissenting voices;
-
allow the
introduction of an all inclusive multi-party democracy;
-
respect the human
and democratic rights of all citizens.
