South Africa sends a reply to EHDR-UK

London, 15 Sep 2003

EHDR-UK Amb JNK Mamabolo, from the Department of Foreign Affairs - Africa, responded on behalf of President Thabo Mbeki to a letter EHDR-UK wrote on 8 Jul 2003, which raised concern regarding the plight of Eritrean students in South Africa. In his letter, His Excellency Mamabolo informed EHDR-UK that the 'Foreign Office is aware and is sensitised to the complaints of the students'. Moreover, for further attention, he advised EHDR-UK officials to contact the Minister of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service as soon as possible.

Based on the advice of Amb JNK Mamabolo, EHDR-UK wrote a letter to the two departments mentioned above for further consideration regarding the case of the stranded Eritrean students in South Africa. The letter mentioned that the students are responding to the Eritrean government’s autocratic demeanour, which is continuing unabated as if the country is not part of the international community. The letter also mentioned that the problems in Eritrea are so severe that they are being brought up by various institutions that advocate for human, citizen and refugee rights.  Acknowledging the fact that there are a range of signals that substantiate restlessness, neglect and ill-treatment in the country,  EHDR-UK stressed the fact that there are increasing number of people fleeing the country and seeking refuge elsewhere.
