Hunger strike in detention

EHDR-UK - 28 Oct 2005

The detained parents from Dekemhare & its suburbs are to stage a hunger strike from Saturday 29 October 2005 for an unspecified period of time. They are protesting against their detention arguing that their children were the responsibility of the state and that they should be asking the state to return their children and not the other way round. They plan to protest against their unfair detention. The government has asked for a bail money of 50,000Nakfa for their release and will be taken by the state if their children failed to return within 30 days. It is also reported that some children have been left without their parents following the most recent wave of arrests.

It is to be recalled that over 200 parents and relatives of those who left the country without exit visas were detained in the early hours of Monday 24 October 2005. The detained have asked Eritreans in Diaspora and the international community to do what they can to secure their release.
