EHDR-UK
- 30 August 2004
EHDR-UK
sent a letter to the Sudanese government and UNHCR officials highlighting
the plight of the Eritreans who were alleged to have 'hijacked' a
plane which was carrying them from their place of detention in Libya back
to Eritrea. The letter stated that although EHDR-UK does not condone
hijacking or violence, the case of these Eritreans was a special one as it
was for survival. The letter went on to state that they
were desperate people who were fleeing from desperate situations. It further stated that,
the Sudan has always been a safe heaven for Eritreans who were fleeing
from Ethiopian occupation during the liberation struggle and from Eritrea
since the Eritrean people were subjected to lawless governance.
The
letter also stated the continuous campaign which was directed at the
Libyan government urging them not to deport any of the Eritreans and
informed the Libyan government on the current UNHCR position which is
against any forced deportation of failed asylum seekers.
The
letter concluded by asking the Sudanese government to resist any pressure
to extradite them and also to provide them with all
the humanitarian protection that the have been longing for.
It
is to be remembered that EHDR-UK has been running various campaigns to
help the Eritreans stranded in Libya and it will continue to look at
various options to highlight their plight.
