Press Release
Eritreans for Human and Democratic Rights in the UK
(EHDR-UK)
EHDR-UK
is deeply concerned and saddened to learn the plight of the Eritrean
Journalists who are languishing in jail without going through fair legal
proceedings. The Journalists
are now reported to be on hunger strike and as the latest reports are
indicating, government agents have moved them to an unspecified location
for an unspecified reason.
EHDR-UK calls on the Eritrean government to
respect the basic human rights of its citizens and immediately release
all those who are under its unlawful custody. EHDR-UK joins with other human rights organizations in
calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all Eritreans
imprisoned for non-violent expression of their views and for the
annulment of the systematic arrests that continue to be used to punish
peaceful dissent. EHDR-UK categorically condemns the illegal imprisonment
of journalists who have been held in Eritrean jails for over six months.
EHDR-UK calls on all fairness and justice
loving people to do what is necessary to accelerate the release of the
journalists and other prisoners. The welfare and well being of those journalists is of
grave concern. To resort to
hunger strike is an extreme measure, and this action taken by the
journalists clearly indicates that the situation in Eritrea has gone
beyond reasonable margins.
Eritrea
is a product of huge sacrifices, and Eritreans should not allow the
dreams of its martyred children be dismantled by the current regime.
