EHDR-UK
delegation met a Foreign Office official
EHDR-UK
- 10 Feb 2005
A
four-person delegation from EHDR-UK met with an official from the British
Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on 10 February 2005.
The purpose of the meeting was for the delegation to explain the
deteriorating human rights situation in Eritrea and to urge the British
government to do more in pressurising the Eritrean regime to respect the
basic human rights of its citizens.
The
official described the current situation in Eritrea as "extremely
concerning".
This phrase is the furthest end of the scale and descriptive of the
worst situation when used by the FCO.
The official further stated that the British government is using
all its diplomatic means to communicate its serious concern on the current
situation in Eritrea with the Eritrean government.
The efforts employed include both unilateral and European.
The FCO was also aware of the incident in Adi Abieto.
The
official stated that the Eritrean government uses the current border
stalemate as an excuse for what is happening but the position of the FCO
is that although the current border situation is of serious concern, it
does not justify the violations that are taking place.
The FCO also believes that the Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Commission (EEBC)
ruling to be final and binding and that it should be implemented
immediately without any precondition.
The
meeting was very productive and informative.
