Press Release
We Remember Our War Dead
20 June 2003
We Eritreans realise that June 20 is a day not
only to remember the dead but also to bear in mind and honour the values
for which our martyrs paid the ultimate price - values such as courage,
selflessness and unreserved service to their fellow citizens.
Today, as we try to grasp the extent and the
meaning of our martyrs' sacrifice, we would like to pause for a moment of
remembrance of those who left us never knowing how much their wishes
would be dismissed. Yes, we do remember our martyrs with an affection
that grows deeper with the years. Nevertheless, we do want to let it be
known that Eritreans are dissatisfied with what ensued after their
departure.
EHDR-UK calls upon the government to release
the names of those who perished in the last war. Not only is it morally
wrong but also inhumane to withhold names of our martyrs while their
parents remain in anticipation of their return.
We would like to remember this day by
reminding the government to respect our human and democratic rights -
rights based on the pledges made by our martyrs. Celebrating Martyrs' Day
becomes meaningless when basic rights, which our martyrs fought for, are
inconsiderately trampled. Hence, there is no dignity when the government
celebrates Martyr's Day while:
·
People
are thrown in jail without charge.
·
Citizens
are denied their constitutional rights, where expressing opposing views
are portrayed and considered as treason.
·
Parents
are deprived of death notification of their martyred children.
·
The
youth are continuously tied up in an endless campaign comparable to
slavery.
·
The
faithful are not allowed to practise their chosen faith.
·
The
security forces constantly intimidate conscientious citizens.
·
There
is no freedom of press.
On this precious occasion, EHDR-UK invites the
public to commemorate this day by faxing your messages to the FAX numbers
listed below in order to put pressure on the government to honour our
martyrs' wishes not only in words but also in deeds.
